Christmas is the time of year to give to those who are less fortunate. The Greater Flint community is especially generous and always willing to lend a helping hand. This year, the need is greater than ever due to fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. Following is a list of some organizations that help the needy and how you can assist them.

We’ve compiled a list of these local groups that can use your donation – where you can make a difference and help make the holidays magical for everyone!

A retired educator with Flint Community Schools, Gloria Barnett loves giving back to her community. She was recently seen at Southwestern Academy presenting dress shirts and neckties to 11th-grade young men as part of the Quinn Chapel AME Church Dress Shirt & Tie program. “We gave away approximately 50 shirts, ties and belts,” she says.
Located on Fenton Road, on Flint’s south side, is Krystal Jo’s Diner – a little place well known for its down-home atmosphere, juicy burgers and fresh-cut fries. Owner Tony Tucker named the place after his wife, Krystal Jo. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the little diner has become a community hangout where everybody knows everybody.
Very quietly, and without a lot of fanfare, a group of Genesee County citizens helps those who are on the front line helping others.
The Genesee District Library hosts the Annual Black History Month Brunch, a community event that recognizes people who make a positive impact in Genesee County. The GDL’s biggest event provides an opportunity for the community to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to world history. The 17th annual event was held on February 3 at the Genesys Conference & Banquet Center in Grand Blanc. Entertainment included a performance by a cappella group Linkin’ Bridge, out of Louisville, Kentucky, that made it to the finals in Season 11 of America’s Got Talent.
